BHM Black Women in Music: LaVern Baker

Despite racist stagehands, segregated rooms, and song-stealing vultures, LaVern Baker overcame mid-century strife to light up the charts!

From rockhall.com:

"Baker— one of the first women to capture the essence of rock & roll..."

LaVern Baker, born in Chicago, Il, made her professional debut at just age 17. Second only to Etta James in the mid-50s, Baker was one of the highest selling artists in music. She was the voice behind multiple million-selling singles and landed herself a spot on a list of Atlantic Records artists that never sold less than 50,000 units (RIAA Gold).
