BHM Black Women in Music: Miriam Makeba

Unintentionally becoming the voice and image of S. Africa made Miriam Makeba a world-renowned symbol of grace, creativity, and influence!

From sahistory.org.za:

"I see other black women imitate my style, which is no style at all, but just letting our hair be itself. They call it the Afro Look."

Born in South Africa in 1932 then being imporisoned along with her mother at just eighteen days old did nothing to stop Miriam Makeba from becoming a musical legend and one of South Africa's greatest cultural ambassadors. Her music not only made her world-famous, but it made her the first African artist to win a Grammy, and allowed her to overcome 31 years of exile from her home country and become a goodwill ambassador for South Africa to the United Nations.
